Panic Attacks can be terrifying.

They seem to start for no apparent reason and the way they present can make you feel like you are going to die. Increased heart rate, palpitations, increased respiratory rate, chest pain, feeling faint, feeling sick, tingling all over, are all common symptoms of a panic attack.

Please try to remember you ARE NOT going to die, I know it's easy for me to say and not so easy to believe when you are in the midst of an attack. Panic attacks usually last for between 5 to 20 minutes and resolve on their own.

The Fight or Flight Response causes all the symptoms you experience - you unconscious mind triggers the response so, often, you are not aware of what has caused the panic attack.

You can help yourself if you feel a panic attack coming on:

  • Start taking some slow deep breaths - when a panic attack starts we tend to take rapid shallow breaths, this gets rid of too much carbon dioxide in the blood, which leads to the faintness and tingly feelings. Rapid, shallow breathing will also cause your heart rate to increase. By taking slow deep breaths less carbon dioxide is 'blown off' and more oxygen is released into the circulation.
  • Try tapping on your wrist in time to the pulse you can probably hear in your ears, this is very effective at distracting the unconscious mind and bringing the heart rate back down.
